Just like that, I've started writing what will be the first, and likely shorter, of two theses hopefully within the next three years.

No, my research isn't done. But that's why I've started writing. Since my code currently doesn't work, I'd otherwise be spinning my wheels waiting for another grad student who is giving all impressions of being bored with his side of this project.

And I use the word writing a bit loosely.

I've saved everything I've written for my advisor over the last 2+ years, in the form of status reports, paper drafts, and preliminary studies. Since part of my thesis will involve a description of this new 3D tool, I'm borrowing from a survey I wrote when I started here of 3D tools that existed previously, a study I conducted for the programmers to determine how best to handle the data, and lengthly descriptions of the tool I cut from the paper I wrote for the conference in Cancun.

I'm also not used to starting documents in the middle, but I can't do an introduction (and certainly not an abstract) without knowing where I'll end up, but this section isn't dependent upon results.

Still a long way to go...

Seems reasonable to get the background stuff written up. You can edit it to fit in with the rest later.

Although I did undergraduate projects that I documented as part of my degree requirements, I never did a true formal thesis (my MS in Computer Science didn't have one). I don't think I could do one at this point either, I have enought trouble writing test documents for work :(
