Indy Irish Fest 2005
Sep. 17th, 2005 09:44 pmToni and I went to the Indy Irish Fest downtown today. Got there a little before 1pm. Were sitting waiting to see Off Kilter, a rock band with added highland pipes whom I've seen before when we found out they couldn't make it and canceled at the last minute (relative of the lead guitar player had a medical emergency), so they put on Siochain, a local band that was similar. They were pretty cool, and I finally learned how to pronounce that word (think sheer khan, like the tiger from The Jungle Book). I think they spell it a bit differently.
siodhchan's LJ user name looks correct to me, but it's Gaelic, so who knows. The vowels; none sound like I would think. And if you're going to have all those consonants, at least pronounce some of them! ;-)
Then we went shopping. Toni and I each got a shirt (I got one to go with my Utilikilt), she got a cool incense burner, then we grabbed some fish and chips and sat back down at the same stage for lunch. We caught the end of The Kells (who had a local step dance group with them called Celtic Footforce) and we ran into some friends before we saw the main band I wanted to see, Gael Sli, the only ones at the fest actually from Ireland. And Toni finally got to understand my celebrity crush on their leader, Siobhan Warfield. :-)
After Gael Sli, we waited in line and got their new second CD and got it signed by the band. We wandered over to see Hog Eye Navvy, but their set (at a different stage) overlapped and with the waiting around after Gael Sli, we missed all but most of the end of their rendition of the song Being a Pirate (for which I'm still looking for lyrics on the web). Ran into a couple more people we know and chatted, then got a tapestry with a Celtic design on it (to use as a barrier on the doorway between our living room and office), something to drink, and headed back to the main stage for Brigid's Cross. I think Peggy Goonan-Baker is one of the best bodhran players I've ever seen. She does the drum solo parts of Wipe Out! on the thing!
I took quite a few pictures, but haven't gone over them all yet. Here a few from Gael Sli and Brigid's Cross:
- Gael Sli - The Band
- Siobhan Warfield on Accordion
- Siobhan on Celtic Harp
- Brigid's Cross - The Band
- Peggy Goonan-Baker on Bodhran
- Paul Baker Playing a Little Kiss Guitar-Style on Fiddle
A fun afternoon/early evening. It was much warmer than we were expecting, too. I had taken a jacket and worn Dockers, when I never needed the former and should have gone ahead and worn my Utilikilt.

question: with that hebrew sounding kkkkkhhhhh sound in the middle or is it more aspirated?
just say no to too many letters and also, how about not picking meaningful LJ names in the middle of bad breakups? Hmmmmmmm? That way lies... difficulty.
