Spooky Noodle
Aug. 13th, 2005 10:44 amOnce again, The Lord of the Rings got me thinking about something I'd never really put my finger on the reason behind why I react the way I do.
Why do I find certain aspects of stories spooky and not others? For example, the whole bit with Shelob doesn't really spook me at all. Part of the issue in the Jackson films, at least, is it's fairly well lit for a scene set in a dark place. I find the sequence near the beginning of Fellowship where the hobbits are being chased to the Buckleberry Ferry by the Nazgul to be scarier by far. The main reason for me is that a giant spider the likes of Shelob is something I'm not likely ever to encounter. Whereas people on horseback (maybe not so for me personally) are, discounting of course the fact that these specific people are 4,000-year-old wraithy people.

But yeah. Some things are more scary than others - the scene where the hobbits are hiding under the tree roots and the nazgul is right over them sniffing? I don't care whether I am reading or watching, that scene makes me hold my breath every. darn. time.
I don't know if it's something I'll ever encounter that makes it scary to me, but something that I can relate to, like, I've hidden from something scary before. So I can project into that feeling. I've never battled a HUGE ASS SPIDER before, but hey, I hate even little spiders so I can only IMAGINE how I'd feel if it were larger than say, my pinky nail. I *know* how I feel about pinky nail sized spiders and that's wall climbing terror, etc.
So for me it's more, can I project my own experirence somehow into the scene? Then it's scary.
