Those of you with greener thumbs than I (thank you so much, by the way, for the mulch advice, etc.), here is a shot of the front beds after I started laying down the soaked newspapers and cypress mulch this morning. I took a break from the heat and because of the fact that I am about out of newspaper (what's down is just over a week's worth of The Indianapolis Star). Must procure more to continue. I think the 15 bags of mulch will be just about exact for the existing beds, so I will need more for the new ones around the rest of the house. What's down so far in the pic below is a third of it (5 bags).

Coming along nicely, eh?

Don't forget to water the HECK out of those plants, since they're new.

The mulch will help with the water, but yeah. Keep an eye on them and give them a drink if they wilt hard (a bit of a limp leaf at high sun is not unusual - if they don't perk up in the cool of the evening, or or wilting in the morning, give 'em a good drink)

I put some basic plant food in my hose-end sprayer and have been watering them for about 1/2 hour every day. I've noticed the colors on the petunias and especially the sage have really come out since planting.

They've been perky in the morning - I went out this morning and the petunias have already started spreading out and the limbs looks bouncy, not limp.

He's done such a good job :-)

We know all about watering - that lawn started as hydroseed - we didn't have any sod laid on our almost half acre lot :-)

Water water everywhere and nary a root to hold it. :-)
