Revenge of the SPANCing Sith?
Jun. 12th, 2005 08:33 amStil in Chicagoland this morning, at
gremlin44 and
elmegil's place with
soaring_phoenix.
Had a good day yesterday, although even with extra caffeine and not getting up until after 7:30 I still can't figure out why I was so sleepy all day. Yesterday morning was quiet. In the afternoon, Toni,
elmegil, and I finally went to see Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
1. Dialogue. Generally sucked, as seems typical for a Lucas script. Carrie Fisher is a frigging script doctor these days. Why did he never call her? The scenes between Padme and Anakin were the worst; the rest wasn't too bad.
2. Plot. Excellent. Given the places the story had to go, it got there wonderfully, IMHO. The big stretch, I thought, was Anakin's actual switch seemed a little fast on the draw. I questioned, at first, starting the Death Star construction and having it take 20 years? Thinking more about it, though, something that huge could take that long the first time, and we can presume the second one was started before Episode IV as well. What I want to do now is view episodes IV through VI with the knowledge that R2-D2 knows what's going on. That amuses me greatly. This one also reminded me a bit, on a smaller scale, of Jackson's film of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King in the sense of where exactly is he going to end it?
3. Visuals. Outstanding SFX eye candy, as expected. The Emperor throwing Senate seats at Yoda was amusing as well as symbolic, IMHO. Grievous with four lightsabers was cool.
4. Acting. MacGregor and McDiarmid carried their weight. That's about it. Jimmy Smits is good, but even in this episode where he gets to save the day more than once, he didn't have enough of a role to shine through.
After the film, we came home and awaited
gremlin44 and K's return (they'd gone to a party way out in the 'burbs), having some yummy chicken chili for dinner.
asetwoman and
topherscott came over to socialize for a bit, and then
elmegil and I played a short two-player game of SPANC.
SPANC is fun. I was sort of going through the motions last night I think because I was soooo tired, but the toys, challenges, and the various catgirl characters are hilarious. The game play is smooth, and seems to fit a standard Steve Jackson card game formula. I think it will be more fun with four players/teams. A very worthwhile addition, however.
No clue when we're going home today. Playing that by ear, I think. Toni's up now, so I think I'll see what she thinks...
