Perspective and Passion

soaring_phoenix was describing something she was doing at work the other day.

Her: ...had to spec out a server: RAM, CPU, drives, etc.

Me: It's funny. Talking about the task as you just described it, if I had to do it, I could not be any less passionate about it in concept. However, slap the name of a video equipment company on the same server and I would really get into doing the exact same task. Why is that?

It's all about interest. I'm passionate about photography and video down to the nitty-gritty of the tools. It must be part of why I refuse to describe myself as a computer geek, but rather a video geek who knows (and is adept with) computers.

It is a good idea to know precisely what sort of geek one is. It is also somewhat metageekish.

I suppose it's rather metageekish that I know I'm several kinds of geek: video, photography, map, road, reading, etc. :-)
