Dec. 15th, 2004 09:02 amWatched our new copy of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - Extended Edition last night. Oh, if I could only remember half of the smart-assed irreverent comments we were making, I'd probably lose at least half of my LJ friends list. ;-)
I was impressed overall with the extra footage, but I'm not as satisfied with all of it as I was hoping to be. My favorite bit by far was the scene with the Mouth of Sauron (surprised? - see the new user icon on this post). He was cool and creepy and amusing. I love the design of the character, the way he spoke, and even the way he moved his head and mouth while speaking. I thought the gag along the river with the army of the dead (Legolas shooting Peter Jackson on the boat, the throw-away "This army" joke, etc.) was great, even though they couldn't keep that in the theatrical release for obvious reasons. The avalanche of skulls forcing them out of the cave earlier was also pretty good.
I'm disappointed we didn't get to see Denethor's palantir as an explanation for his madness. Even when Aragon goes to show himself to Sauron, the movie doesn't make it obvious if that's his or just the one Gandalf took from Orthanc. My verdict is still out on Gandalf's confrontation with the Witch-King of Angmar. I wouldn't have thought, had such a confrontation ever taken place, Gandalf would have ever had the lower hand, which was certainly evident there.
Must watch again over the weekend, next time listening to the commentary track.
