Dec. 4th, 2004 03:47 pm...and I don't have a good one for contra dance yet!
Last night I had a fabulous time at the contra dance in Urbana. Went with
medusas_secret. Haven't been contra dancing in several months, and yet, I think I may finally be experienced enough to say it's just like riding a bicycle. I was more concerned actually about how well my left ankle would hold out, how out of shape I might be, and how I would be able to stay awake. On my current work schedule, I've been crashing by 9pm or so most nights. Compensating for the change to Central Standard Time, to me that's when the dance started last night, and it ran for three hours (the usual weekly ones here in Indy are two).
I went through at least a second (and probably a third and fourth) wind during the dance. I did sit out for three of them, at different times, when I just needed a break. The band was terrific. The caller was interesting, although I think he was having communication issues with the band regarding choice of tempo. Several times we had to restart a dance because the speed just wasn't right. I even got through one of the more difficult dances of the evening without a major flub, and it included one of the most complex contra dance moves, the contra corners. I came up with a good analogy for contra corners that helped a couple of the beginners: it's a pinball machine. The active couples are the balls, and the inactives are the flippers. It works. :-)
My left ankle was a little annoyed with me this morning, but not bad considering how much I danced - I think putting Triads in my dance shoes helped. I'm pretty brain dead today, though. And I don't wanna go to work tomorrow!
