And All That Jazz...
Aug. 17th, 2004 05:14 pmIn Chicago, at the Hyatt on Wacker. Drove up earlier today, leaving
mac_arthur_park for a few days of well-deserved alone time. I made the Worst Preparation Evar, though - forgot my El map, my iPaq (so I can't check any e-mail other than Hotmail because I don't remember the other accounts' passwords), and forgot to get more money before leaving town.
Finally figured out, after years (even decades) of driving up to Chicago from Indy, why it always seems so psychologically jarring to arrive here, especially when my destination is the Loop. 180 miles of coming north on I-65, one gets more and more rural and remote in Indiana. Coming through The Region doesn't help when staying on the highway, and when I finally get off in downtown Chicago, the brain is saying, "Whoa! City again! Wake up!" I've often felt that if I ever relocate to a city larger than Indianapolis, Chicago would take the least adjustment, but it's still a lot bigger.
Tonight, Toni and I are going to walk around the corner to Chipotle for dinner and take it easy. Tomorrow, while she's at HP World, I'll probably hit the Art Institute and take some photos around Grant Park (and maybe even the monstrosity at Millenium Park - I can see the edge of it from the hotel). Tomorrow night, we'll be getting together with
gremlin44 and others. Thursday, I don't know what I'm going to do, yet. Not even sure if I'm going to come home then or hang around until Friday. Probably the latter.
Anyway, hungry. Dinner. Now.
