One heck of a thunderstorm spent the last few hours rumbling through here, and left behind a scalloped, pink sky full of mammatocumulus clouds.

Edit: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] cjsmith for jogging my meteorological memory!

Ooo, nice mammatocumulus (mammatus) clouds! I don't get to see those much, in the thunderstorm-challenged SF Bay Area.

Ah, yes. Thank you for jogging my meteorological memory. That was my first career choice out of high school. From when I was six years old until I actually started submitting applications to universities my senior year, I wanted to be a meteorologist. Not an on-air one, probably just a nameless NOAA/NWS jocky... or, knowing me, a stormchaser. ;-) That started in May of 1974 when my whole immediate family stood in our front year watching a tornado tear up a neighborhood just a few houses away, lift up and skip our house and the surrounding ones, and start working on another neighborhood to the other side.

Wow, so you actually have clue about weather. I'm an amateur cloud-watcher (born of my flying habit) and I like mammatocumulus because, well, they're boobie clouds. That's the extent of my savvy. :-)

Boobie clouds. Okay, then.

You crack me up. ;-)

In eighth grade, I made so many of my classmates nervous one day in English class. I was watching a wall cloud out the window and kept making comments like "Ooh, if that little section there got just the right gust in the right direction..."

Ooo, yeah. If I were a meteorologist of any stripe, I'd probably be a stormchaser too. Storms are COOL. Powerful and deserving of respect/caution, but COOL.
