So I'm a little behind.
May. 26th, 2004 09:24 pmWhen Star Trek: Deep Space Nine first aired, Toni and I got away from watching it regularly after only a few episodes of the first season. That was a big mistake. IMHO, no Star Trek series changed as much from the beginning to the end of its run as that one. We would catch part of an episode from around the fourth season or later and scratch our heads and wonder WTF?? I liked the original series when I was a kid, and as I've gotten older I can appreciate it for camp value. Same with the movies - I even appreciate some of them with the odd number curse (except I will say that the first one was too long (the story would have made a semi-decent one-hour episode) and number five could just go away). The Next Generation grew on me once it moved beyond the preachiness and poor writing of the first couple of seasons and the actors found their characters. Voyager never grabbed me, although I caught an occasional episode in hotel rooms (usually in California on business trips), and, despite Jeri Ryan's appearance, I stand by an observed opinion that the episodes focusing on Seven of Nine were some of the better ones. I tried to watch Enterprise. I really did. Meh.
With the DVD sets coming out for DS9 and reruns on Spike TV, I've started to catch up with regard to that series. I've still got quite a lot to see, but I can already easily say it is my favorite Star Trek series, and in particular that the character of Benjamin Sisko is my favorite of the lead characters. It helps to have someone with the talent of Avery Brooks (and I loved his IBM commercials from a few years ago), but I think the character is the most well-rounded. Patrick Stewart is highly talented and was terrific as Picard, but I think Sisko is a better character.

(And I agree about your assessment of the films as well. Always liked ST:III. All negatives of ST:V should be burned.)

Date: 2004-05-26 09:37 pm (UTC)DS9 is my fave of the series. I could never give a fig whether or not the Voyager crew ever got back to the Alpha Quadrant, and I k ept hoping the Vulcans would just puul the plug on those obnoxious, uppity humans on Enterprise.
The DS9 box set I'd really like to see are the Evil Kira(tm) episodes. Now that babe knows how to party!

Date: 2004-05-27 02:46 pm (UTC)We watched one or two episodes of Enterprise before deciding it wasn't worth bothering. Ray gave up on Voyager, but I watched it fairly consistently in the last couple seasons -- there were a few really good episodes in there, many mediocre ones, and a few really bad ones. I plan to watch the DVDs (yay Netflix) after we're done with DSN. We're only in 4th season so far.
I like Sisko's character too...he's much more conflicted and human than Picard. As for the Voyager, captain...though it's about time they had a female captain, I didn't much like Kate Mulgrew. And they just didn't know how to write for her -- she was never consistent.
