Perusing the extras disk in the Red Dwarf series 1 DVD set, watching the documentary Launching Red Dwarf. I just saw part of an interview with Rob Grant, one of the creators of the series mentioning that this person had read for a part when they were launching the series. It certainly begs the question "what if..."

Alan Rickman as Dave Lister?

Hmmm...

I don't think he'd be dirty enough. Alan Rickman always struck me as kinda prissy. Even when he was all dirty and smelly looking in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. So no I don't think so, but still interesting. I heard Jane Leeves who is Daphne on Frasier was supposed to play Holly and Terry Farrell who was Dax on DS9 was supposed to play Cat in an American version of the show. See Here. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094535/trivia") I love the IMDB.

Alan Rickman as Dave Lister?

Nope. Totally wrong.

He did however play a sleazy Russian in an episode of Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French's series Girls on Top; it was completely bizarre.

He possibly could have done it, according to Grant, based on their original concepts of Lister (all they had fleshed out was that he was anti-authority and more than a bit deranged). Craig Charles, adding the slobbiness, affinity for vindaloo, etc., over eight existing series has definitely made Lister his own, though, I'll agree, and it's hard to picture anyone else.

Also, Hugh Laurie (several roles in Black Adder) supposedly read for Rimmer.

As Lister??! Wow. That'd just have been wrong.

No one could've done Lister better than What's-His-Face.
