Feb. 6th, 2004 05:58 pmSynergy - n - Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman writing a novel together.
Just finished reading Good Omens for the first time, and, while I have trouble coming up with a real ranking, 1-10, for my all-time favourite books, this one belongs with them. From the first pages, I could see the blending of Pratchett's and Gaiman's writing styles. When I saw Terry Pratchett at a lecture/signing in DC last September, he spoke about how he and Neil Gaiman would alternate chapters and send them back and forth. However they did it, it worked swimmingly.
I laughed out loud reading this more than I have at anything in years. Essentially, it's the story of the end of the world. The Antichrist was meant to be switched with another baby at birth, and there is a cock-up. The Four Horsemen ride motorcycles. The earth-bound representatives from Heaven and Hell have an Agreement, and get along nearly as friends. And Adam, the eleven-year-old boy of Doom, has his own ideas...
The story line seems to wander at first, drawing up threads from some very oblique angles, but everything is well-tied together by the end, in both Pratchett's silly and Gaiman's dark and twisted fashion.
I can see why fans have been calling for another collaboration, and I hope the proposed movie (tentatively set to be directed by Terry Gilliam) eventually gets made.

Although I think I saw in Neil's own blog recently that Johnny Depp was considered for Crowley, I like the ideas proposed (with no basis in fact) for this casting. :-)
