Movie Night
Aug. 21st, 2003 10:01 pmI finally saw Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl tonight, with
computerchix (her second viewing). Loved it! A well-fleshed out storyline that wasn't predictable, and the main ensemble of actors seemed to be enjoying themselves. Johnny Depp was terrifically flamboyant. Keira Knightley... *whimper*. Geoffrey Rush does a wonderful "Aarrrr!" :-) It was nice that Verbinski and Bruckheimer didn't make Norrington (Jack Davenport of Coupling fame) a total jerk - he was a good man, just on the other side.
The special effects were fabulous, though I thought I could tell a couple of shots were CGI that probably could have been made a little more transparent (but then, being a video geek, it's hard for me not to notice stuff like that - I get annoyed sometimes that I can tell when audio is a single frame out of sync with the video). As soon as I learned that the moonlight revealed the true nature of the cursed characters, I expected ILM and their subcontractors to show off with several mixed lighting shots, and they did nice work. And does Jerry Bruckheimer ever not use Hans Zimmer to score a film he produces? :-)
Very entertaining - wouldn't mind seeing again on the big screen.
