Diversion...

Here I am, sitting at work in our California office. Why am I updating my LJ instead of working? It's time for a break, and I've gotten more done on the first day and a half of this two week trip than in any previous visit here.
Was just talking to a coworker friend who is going to help me train for my bike ride while I'm out here. In case you didn't already know, I'm training for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Ride to Cure Diabetes in Death Valley, October 26. I used to ride all the time, until halfway through college. It was the only thing athletic I ever really did. That dropped off for the lsat 15 years, so I'm using this ride as an excuse to get back into it (and get a new bike!). I must be crazy, because I'm going to attempt the 105 mile distance, just to see how far I can go. My personal best is 65 miles, and that was 15 years ago. My current best is 36, but I couldn't have done that probably two months ago. Anyway, back home most of the training rides are in flat, central Indiana. While I'm here in the bay area, a coworker is going to take me up into the Santa Cruz mountains one evening next week after work. I need some hill training for the DV ride, so where better, I guess? Should have rented a bike, though - she convinced me to borrow an old bike she has, but it's only got a dual front chainring (not as many low gears). Oh well...
I don't think I'm going to do the JDRF ride again after this year. I have to raise a minimum of $3000. While I'm almost halfway there, and I respect the work of the charity, it's a daunting task that I can't see accomplishing successfully on an annual basis.
I miss
computerchix, travelling so much for work this summer, and can't wait for her to come out here for the weekend on Friday! We're probably going to check out the Exploratorium, the sea lions, maybe Coit tower, and have dinner in the south bay with some 'net friends she's made, whom we're looking forward to meeting.
computerchix will be bringing my 35mm camera, too, so I didn't have to futz with it in two weeks worth of luggage. I'd love to have a medium format or 4x5 out here, but don't own the former, and don't trust flying with the latter, since it actually belongs to a friend.
I should get back to work...
