Decision point?
Oct. 14th, 2002 08:48 pmHave I made a decision? Sometimes when I get in a blah mood (see previous entry), this sort of thing happens. Looking over my results from using a friend's old manual Graflex medium-format camera, and getting a chance to drool in person over
klwalton's GS-1 outfit were the most "recent" clinchers. That, combined with the fact that I don't really have a working 35mm of my own right now and have been wondering if I want to spend the money on a whole new 35mm outfit. No, I'm just not ready for digital. I won't get into the arguments over how the image quality is getting to be on par with film, or how you can do in Photoshop whatever you can do in a darkroom. I like futzing around with film, dammit! And I
Slight pause while I crack up at a line from Johnny Bravo just heard on Cartoon Network: < cartoony Scandanavian accent>"...but you're a doofus, and I'm sorry, but the gods cannot abide a doofus."< /cartoony Scandanavian accent>
Where was I? Oh yeah... I don't have, nor do I really want, a computer that would have the power to do what I would demand of it in Photoshop :-)
Yes, I know I can use
klwalton's (thanks again!), and I'm sure I will, but I may start looking into my own kit. The next obvious question will take even more research: what to get? :-)

Date: 2002-10-15 06:07 am (UTC)Maybe I do just need to switch film. IIRC, Joe uses Velvia quite a bit, and I was very impressed with my own results with Velvia, even though it was 4x5 sheets! :-) A local friend keeps trying to convince me that I don't need to invest in anything. I do keep using his stuff, after all. I've got his A-1, which I've used many times since mine died last year, the manual Graflex 120, and the old Linhof 4x5 at my disposal here, but I still feel like I want something of my own again. Maybe I should check with a local repair shop and see if they can make a Frankencamera for me - my A-1's shitter mechanism died, and M (same local friend) "donated" an A-1 body with fried electronics. I wonder if a good tech can make one good working body out of the two. I opened mine up, and it was scarier than a watch inside.
