Yea!! Got my late b-day presents from the in-laws, and they included a couple of my all-time favorite films on DVD.

  • Koyaanisqatsi: Life out of Balance - one of the most moving sets of visuals I've ever encountered.
  • Trading Places - just plain funny.

Also got:
  • Powaqqatsi - Part two of Reggio's (dir. of "Koyaanisqatsi") Life trilogy. I haven't seen it all the way through yet.
  • Top Secret! - early, hilarious Val Kilmer.

Of course, when I'll have time to watch these is anyone's guess! :-)

Trading Places is a priceless sociological statement. :)

Have you seen Microcosmos?

Trading Places is a priceless sociological statement.

I agree, whole-heartedly.

Haven't seen Microcosmos\. Is it something akin to the altered-perspective look of the 'qatsi films? The Internet Movie DB doesn't seem to list much info on it.

It came out in the mid-nineties, I think. It's basically just a lot of very close up footage of life in a meadow in Switzerland, in ways we'd never think to look at it. There are a lot of bugs. It fascinates me.

Sounds cool. Unfortunately, I don't think it's out on video :-(

Another odd-perspective one I recall from, of all places, "Sesame Street" or something like that, was Powers of Ten". Cool zooming in and out.

Whenever I watch any or part of it (before the DVD, I had/have a very worn VHS copy), I go away with the very repetitive main theme going through my head, complete with bass voices ("Koyaanisqatsi... Koyaanisqatsi..."). It's a difficult earworm to remove ;-)

Gack! Now I've got the earworm, too. I vow swift and terrible revenge. :-)
