I may not have much of a sense of smell, but...

...there are a few I can detect. One in particular brings back interesting memories.

I'm not big on pesto. I used to think it was decent, but thanks to this association, it's definitely not a favorite. My office mate, C, just had a microwave lunch with it, and I shared this story with her as well.

Way back between 11th and 12th grade in high school (summer '83), some friends and I visited another friend who was doing some sort of summer internship experience at Fermilab outside Chicago. He was rooming with some post docs and other visiting scientists in a small house in the little village on the property, so we crashed with him for the weekend. On Saturday, our 2nd night, close to 1:00am, I was awakened by the weirdest odor I think I'd ever encountered. I wandered out toward the source, into the kitchen, where three of the older residents were making spaghetti with homemade pesto.

With marijuana.

They asked if I'd like some. I politely declined, saying I wasn't hungry, and, thanks to the scent, that was true.

I'd smelled 420 before, and I'd had pesto before, and my brain couldn't figure out what in the combination was doing this. To my nose, anyway, take about as much methyl mercaptan (the stuff that's added to natural gas to give it an odor) or hydrogen sulfide (farts, rotten eggs) you can handle and double it.

Marijuana pesto. Sheesh. :-)

Deep Fried Mac & Cheese?

Ew. This could be less Sonic.

So say we all.

(Okay, I know I've mixed references from Doctor Who and Battlestar Galactica. Oh well.)

Got Pot?

I've tried soy milk - bleah. I've tried hazelnut milk - it's not bad, but I'd have to get used to it for everyday drinking. Watching this weekend's episode of Forecast Earth on The Weather Channel, they featured this year's Green Festival in Chicago, where Living Harvest showed off their hemp milk. I don't know - sounds bizarre.

Dear KFC

While separately, I do like your mashed potatoes, corn, chicken, and biscuits, stacking them together in the same dish for your Chicken & Biscuit Bowl, IMHO, is just... bleah.

Someone in your test kitchens needs to remember the name of your company is Yum!

Randomness

  • I should have known none of the seniors in my radar meteorology class would get my Torchwood t-shirt yesterday morning, when before lab most of them were talking about The O.C..
  • Looking back at Thursday's headline in The Indianapolis Star of "Promise: Roads clear by Saturday" makes me laugh that they didn't consider that we're currently getting 2 - 4 inches of more snow.
  • I don't feel so bad for being achy after all the shoveling Wednesday, when my radar & dynamics prof/advisor's husband, who is fairly fit, was still achy yesterday as well. :-)
  • I need to start studying for my atmospheric physics test that is next Friday, although it's open book/open notes/according to the prof, "open anything" (I joked about bringing my laptop). Also next Friday I have dynamics homework and a radar lab due. The former looks easy, the latter, I'm in the middle of, and it's a pain.
  • I'm bummed Trader Joe's seems to have stopped carrying the ginger slices I love. I got a bulk order of chunks from a place called The Ginger People, and it's pretty good, but has had waaaaay too much sugar added.
  • I need to order a t-shirt from Pandemonium Books in Cambridge, MA. They're one of the places I love to hit regularly when in the area (in fact, it's probably one of the few places we'll venture away from Ipswich for over spring break). I want to get one of these to help them stay in business, as they've got an awesome selection, particularly of UK-published imports.
  • More later as events warrant. :-)

Eye of Sauron the Chicken?

We've had the Lord of the Rings movies on the DVD player all day, and this was just too funny a coincidence: Toni went into the kitchen a few minutes ago to check the chicken breasts she was making for dinner. She asked me to come take a look and see if I thought this particular spot where one had bubbled up looked like the Eye of Sauron.

Proof that Sauron was a chicken? )

Attn: Fig Fans and/or Culinary Experts

When Toni and I were at Trader Joe's yesterday, out of curiosity I got a small package of fresh mission figs. I've always loved them dried or in various dishes, but I hadn't tried them fresh. I tried one and it had a slightly unpleasant (to me) bitter aftertaste. Is this normal, and is there anything I can do with these to remedy that (there are about six left in the package, and I don't want just to waste them) other than the obvious (dry them) within my fairly limited kitchen versatility and time?

And may I say that today's Opus comic (unavailable online) is so, so wrong? ;-)
