Just for the heck of it, I powered up the ThinkPad a little while ago, with the drive that had died before the TP itself started having other problems, and it seemed to boot up fine. First thing I did was copy off the Readerware databases - the data I had been most concerned about losing. I also discovered the photos I had taken in Charlottesville, Shenandoah National Park, and Culpeper the weekend of Independence Day were still there (I hadn't copied them to the server yet!! Eek!). So, I rescued them onto a CD-R as well.
W00t!
