Keep 'em coming... [crossposted to

Apr. 3rd, 2004 06:05 pmJust finished reading Robert Rankin's East of Ealing, the third novel in his five-part (and counting) Brentford Trilogy. I feel at home with Rankin's Brentford regulars, including Jim Pooley, the borough's professional bachelor; John Omally, get-rich-quick artist extraordinaire; and Neville the pagan part-time barman of The Flying Swan; among others. This time, they are pitted against Lateinos & Romiith, a faceless corporation bent on computerizing and barcoding everything. Rankin's wit and humour are very much present, and more subtle in this outing. Some aspects of the story were a little predictable as usual, but the means Rankin uses to get there is an amusing ride. And this time, the ending was quite twisted. I think I need to read his next book, The Sprouts of Wrath for my next selection, which is number four in the same trilogy, just to make sure I really understand how things came out.
