Memories of a Childhood Pet
Aug. 6th, 2005 08:48 pmSitting here watching the first disc of season one of Hogan's Heroes, I'm reminded of Inky, the mynah bird we had for a few years in the early '70s. She knew how to say "Hello!" and "Good Morning!" and several other phrases. When Hogan's Heroes was in early syndication, we'd watch it at 6pm every weekday evening. Inky got to where when she heard the drum beats at the beginning, she'd start whistling the tune to the theme song. I was very amused by that.
Unfortunately, as my two sisters, seven and nine years older than me, proceeded into and through adolescence, the frequency and volume of screaming at my house increased dramatically. Inky picked up this, too (no words, just the shrieking. Come to think of it, since my sisters became teenagers, I don't think my parents house has been that quiet. But I digress...), until my dad eventually had to find a new home for her. He hadn't been too happy when I taught her how to say shit, either, but that was before the screaming.
